Basketball Drills: Quick Contests with Coach Tony Miller

In this Dr. Dish Drill of the week from Coach Tony Miller, he demonstrates a great drill called Contested Closeout Shooting focused on game-like action against a defender.  Checkout the full breakdown below!

It can be a challenge creating game-like shooting drills for small group workouts (e.g., 2-4 players). This contested shooting drill simulates game-like shooting with a defender quickly closing out.

Contested Closeout Shooting

  • The defender will start at 3-point line.
  • The shooter will start 5 to 6 feet behind the 3-point line.
  • On the Dish’s pass out to the shooter, the shooter steps in to receive the pass at the 3-point line.
  • At the same time, the defender touches the free throw line then sprints to contest the shot.
