4 Dr. Dish Basketball Shooting Drills for One-Player Workouts

Spending a little extra time in the gym getting ready for the basketball season? Instead of just going through the motions during your shooting workouts, kick things up a level by competing against yourself with timed and scored basketball shooting drills. Here are four competitive shooting games (some are oldies but goodies!) to add to your drill library.

47-Point shooting

In the 47-point drill, the player will be shooting from 5 spots (corners, wings, and top of the key). Take one shot from the spot before moving to the next spot. The first round of 3PAs (5 shots) will be catch-and-shoot 3s. The second round of 5 shots will be catch, shot-fake, escape dribble to the right, shot. The third and final round will be catch, shot-fake, escape dribble to the left, shot. Each 3PA is worth 3 points. Finally, the player will take 2 free throws to end the drill. There is a total of 47 possible points (15 3PAs and 2 FTs).

27 Game

Choose 3 spots on the floor. I like to use the wings and the top of the key. The shooter will take 3 shots (a catch-and-shoot 3PA, a one-dribble pull-up to the right, and a one-dribble pull-up to the left) at the spot before moving to the next spot. Go through the 3 shots from each of the 3 spots 3 times for a total of 27 shots (3 x 3 x 3).

2-in-a-row

Just like 47-point drill, players will be shooting from the traditional five perimeter spots. As the name of the drill implies, players must make two shots in-a-row before moving to the next spot. The Dish will make a pass out to a coach or teammate who will then pass to the shooter. The goal is for the player to make it “around the horn” two times in 5:00.

42s: shoot on the move, shoot stationary

Being able to shoot off the move is as important as catch-and-shoot and off-the-dribble 3PAs. In 42s, players will shoot 6 shots from 7 spots (corners, wings, pro spots and top of the key).

Corners

  • The first 3 shots come with the player sliding laterally from the wing to the corner into a shot.
  • The second 3 shots are catch-and-shoot attempts from the corner.

Wings

  • The first 3 shots come with the player sliding laterally from the corner to the wing into a shot.
  • The second 3 shots are catch-and-shoot attempts from the wing.

Slots and Top

  • The first 3 shots are walk-in attempts.
  • The second 3 shots are catch-and-shoot attempts from the slot.

There is a total of 42 possible 3PAs.
