As hoops season tips off, the holiday season isn’t far behind. And as a player, it always seems like just when you start finding your rhythm, everything shifts. Your routine, your school schedule, even your practices and games. For many players, myself included when I was competing, that sudden change can bring a lot of stress.
The biggest source of stress was trying to maintain my conditioning and keep my shot sharp throughout the break. So much so that I would fail to actually enjoy the break and time with family and friends. For a lot of players, always trying to be at the top of your game at all times is a given because of the high standards and goals you have set for yourself.
While that is important, and the dedication is definitely needed to achieve said goals, being able to enjoy time off and spend quality time with family is just as important.
Finding that balance isn’t always easy, but it’s possible with a little planning and self-discipline. One strategy I found helpful was setting small, achievable goals for the break. Instead of trying to replicate my full practice schedule, I would focus on a few key things, shooting a certain number of shots each day, getting in some conditioning, or working on a specific skill. That way, I stayed sharp without feeling like basketball was taking over every moment.
Another tip is to make your workouts flexible. Holiday schedules can be unpredictable, so being willing to adjust, whether it’s practicing earlier in the morning, after family events, or even just doing a short at-home session can make a huge difference. Even 15-20 minutes focused on your shot or footwork can keep you in rhythm.
It’s also important to lean on your support system. Teammates, coaches, and family can help you stay accountable while also reminding you to enjoy the break. For me, just having someone to practice with or a coach checking in made the process feel less stressful and more structured.
Finally, don’t underestimate the mental side of the game. The holidays are a perfect time to rest, recharge, and reflect on your goals. Time away from the court can actually improve your focus and energy when you return. Enjoying a holiday meal, playing a casual pickup game with friends, or even just relaxing can do wonders for your mindset and overall performance.
Balancing basketball and the holiday season is all about finding that sweet spot between staying committed to your game and giving yourself permission to enjoy the moment. With a little planning, flexibility, and the right tools, like your Dr. Dish, you can come back from the break feeling sharper, stronger, and ready to take on the rest of the season.
