Basketball Moves: The Step Through with Bre Salley

Written by Nick Bartlett | Dec 17, 2018 2:26:53 PM

We're thrilled to release another basketball drill breakdown with our partner Bre Salley in the Dish Lab. Check out some of her other great drills and workouts using Dr. Dish here.

In this breakdown, Coach Salley demonstrates how to utilize the step through move to create space for an open shot.

We know this video may bring some scrutiny on whether or not the move is a travel or not. You'll likely find varying responses at different levels and in different leagues.

The main question is whether you can lift your pivot foot to take the shot or if you have to keep it down with your non-pivot foot as you go into your shot? We've seen this done both ways and we've seen it called a "travel" and "no travel" at different levels. We encourage you to research your own league and talk to referees to determine the rules.

Regardless, the step through is an incredibly effective move to get your defender off the ground and create space for an open shot if done correctly. Check out the breakdown from Bre Salley below!

Again, is it a travel or not? We're not going to make the definitive call as it will vary but we do encourage you to add the step through to your game. If this is considered a travel, make sure to keep your pivot foot down and the move will still be effective.

It's not an easy move to pull off successfully as it oftentimes requires you to shoot off balance or with slightly awkward footwork. Make sure to practice this move to the point where you're comfortable enough to execute it in games.
