4 Ways to Score off the Catch: Split Stance Series

Written by Nick Bartlett | Dec 3, 2018 4:58:40 AM

Utilizing the split stance when catching a pass on the perimeter can be the difference between creating an open shot or having to pass up an opportunity.

On offense, any small advantage you can gain on your defender is crucial for maximizing scoring opportunities. In this video, our partner, Jordan Delp of Pure Sweat Basketball, demonstrates 4 different ways to gain an advantage when using the split stance while the ball is in the air.

Using relevant split stance basketball drills (see video below) is the best way to improve and prepare for game situations.

The Drill

As Jordan explains in the video, it's essential to read the defense as the ball is in the air. If it looks like they're closing out hard, that gives you the opportunity to split your stance and attack immediately. By dropping your butt and getting into an explosive stance, it makes it difficult for the defender to close out and stay in front.

In this series, Jordan shows 4 options to work off of when splitting your stance:

  1. Catch, rip, and go
  2. Fake jab and shoot the jump shot
  3. Fake jab towards the baseline, attack middle
  4. Rocker step, attack baseline

Again, it all depends on how the defense is playing, but each one of these options can be effective if executed correctly.

Our other friend and partner, Jordan Petersen of Positionless Basketball also discusses creating an advantage through proper use of footwork (including the split stance) here.

The Dr. Dish All-Star

If you notice, the Dr. Dish All-Star machine is actually being used AWAY from the basket in this drill series. The Dr. Dish is actually located near the top of the key which is simulating the location of a game-like pass. This is made possible through the patented Dr. Dish swivel net technology ONLY available on the Dr. Dish All-Star.

Training game-like should always be the #1 priority when incorporating basketball drills like this into your training or basketball practices. The versatility of the Dr. Dish All-Star allows for more game-like training than any other basketball shooting machine on the market.

Conclusion

It's important to focus on the details within any of the basketball drills you execute. In this series specifically, the hard work won't matter if you practice without proper fundamentals.

The work here starts while the ball is in the air. By catching the ball in an athletic stance and ready to attack, it puts more pressure on the defense. Use this split stance series to gain more space and opportunities to score in game scenarios!
