Basketball preseason is right around the corner! As you build your drill library for the season, consider spending even more time this year shooting as a team. Here are three competitive shooting drills your players will love—some are oldies but goodies!
1. 33 Point Shooting
Split your group into two teams and send them to their own baskets. The goal is to score 33 points as a team first. Every make is worth 3 points. On consecutive missed shots after a make, 3 points are subtracted. (Teams are not penalized multiple -3 points for multiple consecutive missed shots.)
2. 4 Spot Shooting
Place 4 shooters around the perimeter (corners and slots). The remainder of the players will start on the baseline, holding four basketballs. On “go,” begin passing the balls around the perimeter to each player. Immediately on the catch, players shoot their basketball. After shooting, players move up 1 spot on the floor (i.e., passer to corner, corner to slot, slot to other slot, slot to corner, corner to the end of the line on the baseline). Each shot is worth 1 point. The first team to a predetermined total wins.
3. Win the Spot
Select 4-5 spots on the floor to shoot from. Players line up at the first spot. Players are competing to “win the spot” (i.e., make 5 shots first). The coach determines the dribble combo that will be used at each spot before the shot attempt. The first player to make 5 shots wins the spot.
