Dr. Dish Fam's Coach Katie Meier announced on Thursday March 21st that she is retiring as the University of Miami's Head Women's Basketball Coach. Coach Katie Meier led the team for 19 seasons and retires as the school's all-time winningest basketball coach with 362 wins. Take a trip down memory lane with us reflecting on Coach Meier's 19 seasons at Miami and the legacy she'll leave behind.
Coach Katie Meier
During Coach Meier's 19 seasons at Miami the team saw 11 20-win seasons, 10 NCAA Tournament berths, and their first ever trip to the Elite Eight in 2023.
She shared her retirement with an announcement on Instagram:
Nineteen years ago, I was offered my dream job to be the head coach of the University of Miami, and while I have absolutely loved living that dream, it is with a heart full of pride and gratitude that I announce my retirement from coaching,” Meier said. “Miami is an incredibly special place, and my journey here has been an honor and a privilege. Today is a day to celebrate and reflect on the amazing success that was achieved through collaboration with outstanding people." -Katie Meier
The Miami Way: Competitive joy
One of Coach Meier's top priorities was having players that played with competitive joy. There is always going to be hard work involved when chasing your basketball dreams but it's important to remember what got you started in the first place. Brush off mistakes and have that next play mentality.
green light shooting challenge
We hope the Green Light Shooting challenge remains a legacy at Miami - it's one of our team's favorites! Coach Meier designed this challenge when she noticed that a lot of players on court shoot the 3 but weren't knocking 'em down. In order to be considered a three-point shooter in a game, Miami players need to earn their "green light" from this challenge.
Challenge Breakdown:
- Players will go around the horn shooting threes for a total of 5 minutes.
- Players can't move to the next spot until they streak 2 in a row.
- If a player can go around the horn twice streaking 2 in a row at each spot they earn the green light to shoot 3 point shots in a game.
If you have the green light, Coach Meier wouldn't say anything in a game if you miss a shot or two because you earned it in practice. If you earned more of a yellow light from the challenge after a missed shot or two it would've meant a conversation with coach on the bench. If you're in the red, Coach Meier didn't want to see any early 3-point shots in a game or you'd find yourself on the bench.
It's been an absolute pleasure to have the Miami Women's team and Katie in the Dr. Dish Fam and we wish her all the best!
