It's that time of year again. Basketball players, coaches, trainers, parents, and fans around the world are thinking about everything 2023 holds. Each new year brings new opportunities and challenges. As you strive to accomplish your 2023 resolutions/goals read our favorite tips for transforming your daily routines!
#1: Habit Stacking
Habit stacking is a technique that involves adding a new habit to an exisiting routine or set of habits. This technique is centered around the idea that by adding a new habit to a pre-existing one, it's easier to remember and add to a routine.
There are lots of ways basketball players can use this technique to improve their game. If a player's goal is to stay injury free they can habit stack by stretching before and after their workouts which are already a part of their routine. Heading to their workout or finishing it are the cue the player needs to remember to stretch.
Another example of habit stacking can be seen with a player who wants to become a better shooter. They know it requires work outside of regular training/practice, so they decide that after each training session they'll shoot different shots for an extra 30 minutes. By connecting this new habit to the cue of finishing a training session, the player is more likely to develop this new habit in their routine.
#2: Pair something you get to do with something you have to do
We can all admit there are certainly aspects of training that we know are beneficial but we might not want to do. Some players might not like the conditioning aspect of training or recovery techniques neccessary to stay injury free.
A tip we love is to pair something you GET to do with something you HAVE to do. What does that mean? Let's say you have to do a conditioning workout outside of practice. Bring a friend along or your headphones to bump your favorite playlist or show while you work. Adding something that you associate positive feelings with to something that is difficult will not only make it easier to get through but could possibly transform how you feel about the activity.
These two tips will help players will be able to elevate their routines and ultimately transform their game! We can't wait to see what our #DrDishFam will accomplish in 2023.
