Luka Doncic had his best season this year, putting up almost 34 points per game along with 9+ assists and rebounds per game as well. His play-style and playmaking is a sight to marvel at for NBA fans. He has led the Dallas Mavericks to the western conference semifinals against the OKC Thunder that tips off on May 7th. Luka uses a variety of skills and moves to get great looks for himself. Here at Dr. Dish we want to highlight his signature moves and teach hoopers everywhere how to work his moves into their offseason training. Check out the video and breakdown below!
Move 1: Rock the baby into a stepback
- Size up defender in an isolation
- While moving towards the defender downhill, dribble between your legs the same way twice to "rock the baby"
- This will freeze and keep the defender guessing for your next move, quickly stepback for an open jumper
Luka uses this move on any type of defender and can get consistent open looks while defenders are flat-footed. Be sure to sell the initial between the legs and act as if you're going to drive towards the paint. Keep your balance and shoulder square to the rim on the stepback.
Move 2: Fake Spin into a Stepback
- Isolate your defender and start driving downhill
- While around the elbow perform a half spin in either direction
- Spin back the same way you started and stepback into a fadeaway jumper
This move takes skill and elite footwork to avoid traveling or slipping. Make sure to keep your balance on both the fake spin and stepback. Rise up into a fadeaway jumper off one leg.
Back foot pivot Step through Fadeaway
- Dribble drive towards the paint in either direction
- Come to a quick stop and pump fake then pivot with your outside foot and step through into your defender
- Fadeaway off one foot for a jumper
Luka is one of the best fadeaway and isolation players in the NBA. Use this footwork breakdown to master an elite move. Make sure your clear of any help or rotating defender while driving into the paint.
