Basketball Shooting Machines: How Dr. Dish is making Professional Coaches more Productive
by Evan Davis, on Nov 29, 2016 8:06:28 AM
We tend to put a lot of emphasis on how basketball shooting machines can improve player performance, but there are many benefits for the coaching staff as well. We've already talked about how coaches can hold their players more accountable by using a Dr. Dish machine, but when we sat down with Grâce Lokole, Head Coach of the Niagara River Lions of the National Basketball League of Canada, he stated that one of the biggest impacts the Dr. Dish had on their practices was the freedom it gave to the assistant coaches.
"Before we had a shooting machine, our passer and rebounder was typically an assistant coach. Now my assistants can be working with certain players on one thing while I'm coaching other players. We get a lot more done in the same amount of time now."
"The Dish is like Having another Coach on the Floor"
We've heard quite a few coaches say something similar to this in talking with them. We asked Coach Lokole what exactly his assistant coaches were doing now that they weren't just rebounding.
"Well, a lot of times now, if we're working on something individually or with a couple players, the assistant coach will play defense. Before, they'd be under the hoop and passing the ball as well. So at the very least, they aren't having to run all over the court to get the same effect."
Even Simple Tasks are Easier
Some coaches have told us as well that if they would run a season long competition around shooting percentages, it would be tasked to their assistants to log all of the info for players, which, while fairly easy, was quite a manual process. Coach Lokole touched on this as well, talking about how they track their off-season shooting programs now that they have a Dr. Dish.
" Now that we can keep track of all our players' stats online, it takes a couple clicks to print everything off. Most of the time though, we don't even print anything any more. That's kind of the way the world is going now."

We would like to thank Coach Lokole for sitting down with us and sharing his story with us and we wish the River Lions the best of luck this season! If you have your own story of how you utilize your Dr. Dish for game-like training we'd love to hear from you.
And if you're looking for inspiration on how to further incorporate your shooting machine into your practices, Coach Mason has been busy in the #DishLab creating drills you can try out. Just take a look at our Drill Video Library!
