How to Prioritize Your Time Now That The Season Has Started

Now that the season has started, it's easy for a majority of coaches to say, "I don't have time"...
Why? Because every team faces the same challenges once the season officially begins—finding time to address everything that needs their attention. The reality is, you make time for what matters most. The key is deciding where to focus your efforts.
This is the 5th featured article from Christopher J. Wirth, our partner from No Quit Living and The Positivity Tribe.
Once the season starts, the practices, games, film, and travel consume many of your available hours. However, unless you’re practicing 24/7 (and no one is!), it becomes crucial to prioritize. During a busy season, it’s impossible to address every area of basketball in each practice.
So, what do you focus on? The answer lies in clarity. Identify the most impactful areas of improvement for your team right now. Consider asking these questions:
- What are the non-negotiables for this week?
- Which skills or drills will bring the most benefit?
- How can I integrate team-building into our routine without taking extra time?
Maximizing your time is more than just cramming in extra drills. It’s about efficiency and effectiveness. Intention. For instance, blending skill development into conditioning drills or using game-film sessions to reinforce key strategies can double your impact without stretching your schedule.
It’s also essential to recognize that you don’t have to do it all in one practice, or one week. Progress is about consistency and focus over time. Championships are won throughout the season, not in jamming everything into one single practice session.
The next time you catch yourself saying, “I don’t have time,” take a step back. Look at your schedule, and ask yourself: Am I prioritizing what truly matters most right now?
Remember, coaching isn’t just about Xs and Os—it’s about leadership, development, and ensuring your players are growing both on and off the court.
Let’s make this season count, one focused practice at a time!
