3 Basketball Drills To Do At Home

For those who decide to take their game to the next level, training all year round has become increasingly important. The only issue is that kids can only spend so many hours at the gym or away from home, so let's chat about 3 basketball drills to do at home to get better!
1. Shooting- BEEF
Players are often thrust into action when practicing for their club or school team and this limits their ability to work on basic skills, such as the fundamentals of a good shot. This "BEEF" shooting drill is an acronym for Balance, Eyes, Elbow, and Follow through.
We love this quick video that explains BEEF!
BEEF can be practiced at home, in a driveway, basement, or even bedroom. Breaking down each of these focuses and taking the time to learn is crucial for player development.
Another way to practice this is to have the player lay flat on the ground and simply shoot the ball. This allows the player to work on keeping the elbow in, and a straight follow-through.
2. Ball-Handling- Figure 8 Progression
Ball-handling is a skill that requires a ton of repetition, but the unique thing about it is you can work on it virtually anywhere! I like to encourage my players to work on their dribbling skills at home because it gives them an opportunity to try new things without the pressure of impressing a coach or teammate on spot.
One of my favorite dribbling drills is the Figure 8 progression. This drill requires players to focus on handling the basketball with both hands in multiple directions around each leg. It also focuses on controlling the basketball at different heights and speed which is a key ingredient for success.

3. Agility- Box cone drill
If you haven't invested money into strength training, you are with the majority of people with kids that play sports. There are still great ways to work on quickness, agility and strength.
One of my favorite drill to do at home is the quick feet cone drill, it can be done without a basketball or hoop! All you need is cones, or any marker to set up your touch points.
Below I showcase this agility drill! This is just a taste of the types of drill offered alongside the All-New Dr. Dish Home machine.
Pro Tip: I set up my cones about the length and width of the free throw lane line area. Players will cycle through in a box then X pattern alternating directions. Incorporate squat jumps at each cone to promote explosion and strength training if desired. The goal is to take short, choppy quick steps navigating around each cone. staying low with active hands helps with body movement and flow.
We hope you like these drills to complete at home. Here at Dr. Dish Basketball, we do our best to provide training tips and solutions for home as well as support for school programs.
